Kevin is the President and CEO of MassachusettsBiomedical Initiatives, a private economic development organization that promotes the growth and expansion of the Biotechnology, Medical Device and Bioinformatics
industry. MBI operates three life science business incubator facilities in Worcester – located at Union Street, Gateway Park, and Barber Avenue, home to over 14 companies with approximately 85 employees, providing cost effective laboratory space and high quality business development services. He previously served as Vice President and Director of Marketing in a combined public/private partnership position with the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and the City of Worcester where he instituted a comprehensive business and industry marketing and recruitment plan and was also charged with the opening of the new Convention Center at the DCU Center.

From 1986 to 1994 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. While serving in the Legislature, he chaired the Committee on Redistricting, was Vice Chair of Ethics, and sat on the Ways and Means Committee. In the Legislature, he championed the Biomedical industry and was a co- sponsor in enacting the Emerging Technology Fund, Investment Tax Credit, and Tax Increment Financing legislation. He was also the Co-Founder and Chair of the Central Mass Legislative Caucus.

He served on the Worcester Business Development Corporation and was part of the development team which created the highly successful one million square foot Massachusetts Biotechnology  Research Park. Kevin is the former Chair of the City of Worcester’s License Commission and is a member of the Reliant Medical Group Board of Trustees. Kevin, who lives in Worcester with his wife Linda and their two children, Kylle and Trevor, is also active in many civic and community activities.

Judy Cocaine joined Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives in June of 2001 as Manager of Administration. She is responsible for overseeing the office administration and providing operational support. Judy has over twenty years of experience in the administrative field, with previous service at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and at the Colleges of the Worcester Consortium.

James Duffy brings 25 years of experience in property management both in the public and private sector. He is responsible for the facilities management at all three of MBI’s locations.

Nancy Pond joined MBI in June 2009 as its an Accountant and Full Charge Bookkeeper. Nancy is responsible for the day to day accounting operations through financial statement preparation and reporting. Nancy has over 25 years of experience in the corporate accounting field and marketing profession, bringing with her extensive office management and accounting experience in all fields of recordkeeping.

Michele Pitoniak-Crawford joined MBI in October 2003 as Director of Health & Safety. Michele is responsible for managing all aspects of chemical, biological and radiological safety. She serves as the MBI representative to local, state and federal agencies on issues of permitting and compliance and is a resource to tenant companies on issues of training and laboratory safety. Michele has over 20 years of experience managing health and safety programs in academic and research environments. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Biological Sciences from Smith College and a Master of Public Health degree from Boston University’s School of Public Health. She is also certified by the IHMM as a Master Level Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), licensed by the State of Massachusetts Board of Registration as a Registered Sanitarian (RS) and a Certified Health Officer (CHO). Ms. Pitoniak-Crawford is a member of the New England American Industrial Hygiene Association, American Society of Safety Engineers, and the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers.

Joseph Gormley is a senior industry consultant and Managing Director of Informatics and Biocomputing Resources for Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives. He is responsible for the Biocomputing Center’s operational planning, software engineering team management, and the establishment of strategic engineering alliances. Mr. Gormley’s engineering interests include the use of artificial intelligence in biosimulation design and the evaluation of emerging data mining techniques in support of personalized medicine. He is a member of American Association of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). He has over twenty years of experience in software design and project management and is an approved NIH consultant. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Maryland and a Master of Liberal Arts in Biology from Harvard University’s Division of Continuing Education. In 2001, Mr. Gormley received a Certificate of Appreciation and Achievement from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for volunteer efforts supporting biomedical industry economic development. In 2005, Mr. Gormley led the MBI Technical Team awarded a Regional Priority Grant in Biocomputing and Systems Biology from the John Adams Innovation Institute. His personal interests include volunteer work with the Massachusetts State Science & Engineering Fair, the Massachusetts Special Olympics and regional fundraising events for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
